Rupert Charmak
WRITER & DIRECTOR

An award winning writer & director
I’m Rupert — a multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker who’s had the pleasure of working with companies like ITV, Shakespeare’s Globe, and the Park Theatre, among others. Right now, I’m developing projects for the BBC and other major streaming platforms. I wear many hats: writer, director, fight director, actor, and producer — across TV, film, theatre, and radio.
I’m of mixed Indian and British heritage, born and raised in Brighton, and moved to London to train as an actor. I graduated from Mountview Academy in 2009, and since then, I’ve built a diverse career that bridges theatre and film.
My obsession with martial arts and movement started early — I was kickboxing and boxing competitively from the age of 8. Later, I coached Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA. Over the years, I’ve also collaborated with charities to design and lead empowerment and self-defence workshops, reaching schools, police departments, and corporate organisations around the world. After the global outrage following the ‘Delhi gang rape’, I was invited to India to lead workshops with the police and local communities — a humbling and eye-opening experience.
My understanding of violence — and the psychology behind it — has deeply influenced my artistic work. It’s led me to choreograph fights for theatre and film, including the critically acclaimed Going For Gold at the Park Theatre (which toured to the Caribbean). I was Fight Director and Co-Director on that project — a Windrush, mental health, and boxing biopic about Frankie Lucas. I was honoured to be nominated for an Offie Award for Best Movement and Choreography for it. Most recently, I was the Fight Director for The Effects of Lying on ITVX, starring Mark Williams and Ace Bhatti.
My first film as writer and director, Dark Justice, won Best Human Rights Film and Best International Film at Atlantic Bridge in Amsterdam. The Climax Jury wrote:
“Charmak’s decision to explore this subject matter in his first film is a daring choice, echoing the audacity of Orson Welles in his ground-breaking debut Citizen Kane. Like Welles, Charmak demonstrates an ability to break conventional storytelling boundaries, challenging the audience to confront uncomfortable truths about society.”
I’m incredibly passionate about Suckerpunch Productions and the work we’re putting out into the world. From the film and TV projects we’re developing, to the new voices we’re championing, and the co-productions we’re building — it’s a really exciting time. My feature film King of Creatures, which I’ve written and will be directing, is set to shoot later this year. I also have a radio play and two theatre projects in development.
I love collaborating with brands and people who lead with integrity, and I’m always open to exciting, diverse projects that move me — so if that sounds like you, don’t hesitate to reach out.
