Rupert Charmak

WRITER & DIRECTOR

An award winning writer & director

Rupert is a multi-disciplinary artist and film maker who has worked with companies such as ITV, The Shakespeare’s Globe and the Park Theatre, among others. He is currently developing work for the BBC and other prominent streaming platforms. A writer, director, fight director, actor and producer for TV, Film, Theatre, and radio. Rupert is of mixed Indian and British heritage who grew up in Brighton, and moved to London to train as an actor, graduating from Mountview Academy in 2009. Since then, he has built a diverse career across theatre and film.

Rupert has been obsessed with martial arts and movement from a young age, where he started kickboxing and boxing from 8 years old, competing to a high level and later coached Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Additionally, he has collaborated with charities to design and teach workshops focussed on empowerment and self-defence. These programs have reached schools, police departments, and corporate organizations worldwide. Following the global outrage after the ‘Delhi gang rape’ he was asked to go to India leading workshops with Police and local communities.

Rupert’s experience and expertise with violence and the phycology behind it has bled into his work as an artist, leading him to choreograph fights for theatre and film, most recently including the play ‘Going For Gold’ at the Park Theatre which recently toured to the Caribbean, he was Fight Director and Co-Director on this critically acclaimed production and the Windrush, mental health and boxing biopic about Frankie Lucas, which Rupert has been nominated for an Offie Award for best movement and choreography and was the fight director currently on ITVX for The film ‘The Effects of Lying’ Starring Mark Williams and Ace Bhatti.

Rupert’s first film as a writer and director ‘Dark Justice’, won best Human Rights film and best international film at Atlantic Bridge in Amsterdam. Climax Jury review stated “Charmak’s decision to explore this subject matter in his first film is a daring choice, echoing the audacity of Orson Welles in his ground-breaking debut Citizen Kane. Like Welles, Charmak demonstrates an ability to break conventional storytelling boundaries, challenging the audience to confront uncomfortable truths about society”.

Rupert is passionate about Suckerpunch Productions and the work we put out into the world. The film and TV projects in development, the new voices they can’t wait to share with the world and the co-productions moving forward. Rupert’s feature film ‘King of Creatures’ will be shooting later in the year which he has written and will be directing with a radio play in development and two theatre plays also in development it’s an exciting time for Rupert and SPP. Rupert is passionate about working with Brands and people with integrity and is always keen to collaborate on exciting diverse projects that move him, so please do reach out and connect.
